Jumped in the pool after my quick lifting session and a quick sit in the sauna.
- 300m warmup
- Intervals - repeat 20x
-
- 20m freestyle
- 20m breaststroke
- 240m cool down
Total distance: 1340m. Total time: 35 min. I had my own lane for most of the session, which was lovely. Didn’t have any issues with my hamstring but I wasn’t in top form.
Headed in for an easy swim in the little pool at the Y after some weight training and some time in the sauna. Just kept moving for 1000m, alternating between 40m freestyle and 40m breaststroke for the most part. Kept the pace nice and easy and finished up in around 18 min.
Swam my one and only NYC Swim event of the year today and it was a good one - the Brooklyn Bridge Swim. Starting in the pebble beach right near my office in DUMBO, Brooklyn, 500 intrepid souls waded out and swam to Manhattan, right under the Brooklyn Bridge. Total distance was around 1k and my time was 24:55. This wasn’t a great time, but considering I got blown out a bit on the course and managed to beat Dave, I’m happy with it.
The East River has a bad rep (thanks to Kramer) but aside from the rocky entry in Brooklyn, it was lovely and felt pretty clean. The event was also really well organized this year - we had a multiple wave start ranked by approximate swim speed. There were no kick storms at the start or at any of the turn buoys which was very refreshing. The sand beach on the Manhattan side was also surprisingly soft. All in all, a great event.
Saturday night at the Y. It was pretty crowded, so I just hopped into a lane and started moving. Didn’t do any kick drills or anything, I just went. Swam 1800m straight in 35 min. Felt pretty good today.
Another late night swim session at the Y.
- 320m warmup
- 200m kick
- Intervals - repeat 10x
-
- 40m freestyle
- 20m breaststroke
- 320m cool down
Total distance: 1440m. Total time: 35 min. Not so crowded, so intervals weren’t a problem. Felt pretty good in the water today and really enjoyed the cool down.
Headed to the Y for a late night Wednesday swim.
- 320m warmup
- 200m kick
- 200m pull
- 160m kick
- 160m pull
- 120m kick
- 120m pull
- 80m kick
- 80m pull
- 320m cool down
Total distance: 1760m. Total time: 45 min. Lots of drills today. Lots of slow people doing retarded things in the water too. Ever have someone just decide to start swimming against traffic in a regular circle swim? Two separate people did it in my lane tonight. Just amazing.
Well if Friday nights are the right time to swim at the Y, Sunday afternoon at noon is the wrong time. Had to wait before I could hop into a lane (max of 4 swimmers at a time) and dealt with a full lane the whole time. As a result, I threw my planned workout out the window and just swam 1000m straight (mixing free and breaststroke and ramping up the intensity as it felt natural) in around 15 min. Followed that up by an easy 300m cool down.
Total distance: 1300m. Total time: 25 min.
Friday night is the time to swim at the Y! I had a lane to myself the entire time.
- 320m warmup
- 200m kick
- Intervals - repeat 15x
-
- 20m freestyle
- 20m breaststroke
- 240m cool down
Total distance: 1360m. Total time: 35 min. I like the shorter intervals since I can maintain a higher intensity. I felt the intensity start to drop on the 15th interval though, so I cut it short instead of doing 20 like I planned.
I was short on time, but wanted to get in the pool for a bit. Jumped in and just started going and decided not to break it up with drills or interval sets. Ended up losing track of my distance but I got in a nice rhythm and swam for 25 minutes straight. I’d estimate that I completed about 1700m, but that’s just a guess. Felt really good tonight.
Late night swim at the Y after a precarious box squat session.
- 320m warmup
- 200m kick
- 240m pull
- Intervals - repeat 5x
- 40m freestyle
- 20m breaststroke
- 300m cool down
Total distance: 1360m. Total time: 38 min. The people in this pool have to be the all-time most inconsiderate motherfuckers ever to don a swim cap. I was almost used to someone jumping in front of me (and going as slow as humanly possible) right as I’m making my turn off the wall, but I certainly wasn’t prepared for someone to stop right in front of me in the middle of the pool…twice. Common courtesy be damned!
Hit the pool at the Y for a mid-day swim before a long plane ride:
- 280m warmup
- 200m kick
- Intervals - repeat 10x
- 40m freestyle
- 20m breaststroke
- 320m cool down
Total distance: 1400m. Total time: 35 min. I really enjoyed the cool down today. Basically paced myself with the slower swimmers in the medium lane and relaxed. I love a good swim.
Just signed up for a summer membership at the Y so I can get my swim legs back and prep for a few races this summer. Headed in for a late night workout:
- 320m warmup
- 160m kick
- 160m pull
- 160m regular
- 80m kick
- 80m pull
- 80m regular
- 40m kick
- 40m pull
- 40m regular
- 200m cool down
Total distance: 1360m. Total time: 35 min. Did my knee circles at the end too. I really love to swim but this pool is pretty nuts the way they limit each lane to 4 swimmers and how everyone acts like they’re the only ones in their lane.
EDIT: I forgot this pool is 20m, not 25. Recalculated the distances accordingly.
Hit the Y for a dip as a reprieve from this crazy heat.
- 300m warmup
- Intervals - repeat 15x
- 20m freestyle
- 20m breaststroke
- 300m cool down
Total distance: 1200m. Total time: 30 min. I rested for about a minute after each 5 intervals to make sure I could go full throttle for most of the freestyle laps.
Participated in my first NYC Swim event since 2009 today. It was a 1.5km East River swim right off of Randall’s Island and it went alright - I finished in 31:27. Dave swam as well and I stayed on his tail for the entire course but he finished a few seconds ahead of me.
The course was weird because we started and finished in knee-deep mucky water that was really hard to swim in. I ended up doing a really shallow breast stroke since it was too shallow to swim freestyle and too gross (and dangerous) to walk in. The water was a nice temperature, very still, and felt surprisingly clean for the East River though. This just makes me hungry to do more of these open water swims.
Took a late night swim in preparation for this weekend’s race.
- 320m warmup
- Intervals - repeat 4x
- 100m freestyle
- 40m breaststroke
- 340m cool down
Total distance: 1360m. Total time: 30 min. Really crowded in the pool today, but I still got some work in. Intervals were medium intensity due to the crowds.
