Hit the Y for a dip as a reprieve from this crazy heat.
- 300m warmup
- Intervals - repeat 15x
- 20m freestyle
- 20m breaststroke
- 300m cool down
Total distance: 1200m. Total time: 30 min. I rested for about a minute after each 5 intervals to make sure I could go full throttle for most of the freestyle laps.
Participated in my first NYC Swim event since 2009 today. It was a 1.5km East River swim right off of Randall’s Island and it went alright - I finished in 31:27. Dave swam as well and I stayed on his tail for the entire course but he finished a few seconds ahead of me.
The course was weird because we started and finished in knee-deep mucky water that was really hard to swim in. I ended up doing a really shallow breast stroke since it was too shallow to swim freestyle and too gross (and dangerous) to walk in. The water was a nice temperature, very still, and felt surprisingly clean for the East River though. This just makes me hungry to do more of these open water swims.
Took a late night swim in preparation for this weekend’s race.
- 320m warmup
- Intervals - repeat 4x
- 100m freestyle
- 40m breaststroke
- 340m cool down
Total distance: 1360m. Total time: 30 min. Really crowded in the pool today, but I still got some work in. Intervals were medium intensity due to the crowds.
Headed to the pool at the Y for a late swim:
- Repeat 20x
- 40m freestyle
- 40m breaststroke
Total distance: 1600m. Total time: 32 min. Had my own lane for most of this and once I got into a comfortable rhythm, I just decided to keep going with the 40/40 split.
Working from home today, so I took a midday swim:
- 360m warmup
- 240m kick
- Intervals - repeat 4x
- 100m freestyle
- 40m breaststroke
- 320m cool down
Total distance: 1480m. Total time: 37 min. Pretty much the same session as last time. Who would’ve thought there’d be so many people in the pool in the middle of a weekday afternoon? Not I.
At the Y for a late night swim:
- 360m warmup
- 300m kick
- Intervals - repeat 4x
- 100m freestyle
- 40m breaststroke
- 320m cool down
Total distance: 1540m. Total time: 37 min. I didn’t have space to do any full intensity intervals today, so I went for 100m at a good, steady clip. Felt pretty good in the water.
At the Y, working on my sweeming:
- 320m warmup
- 200m kick
- 600m mixed stroke
- 320m cool down
Total distance: 1440m. Total time: 35 min. The pool was HOT tonight. Like 86 degrees. Too hot. But not so crowded, so I’ll take it.
At the Y for a late night swim:
- 300m warmup
- 300m kick
- Intervals - repeat 12x
- 20m freestyle sprint
- 20m breaststroke
- 340m cool down
Total distance: 1420m. Total time: 35 min. The pool gets a bit crowded at night, which makes swimming intervals harder. I suspect I’ll need to do more drills and technique work when it’s really crowded. Took a nice 10 min sauna after.
Just joined up at the Prospect Park YMCA to get my ass back in a pool. They have a pretty nice 20m lap pool with good morning and night hours. For my first swim back:
- 280m warmup
- 240m kick
- Intervals - repeat 6x
- 40m freestyle sprint
- 20m breaststroke
- 320m cool down
Total distance: 1200m. Total time: 35 min. Also did my standard knee circles, front kicks 3 x 10 each side afterwards to cool down. It’s so nice to be back in the pool, I just need to wrap my head around the different distance to make sure I’m getting enough distance in. Took a 10 min sit in the sauna after all that. Felt gravy.
Back at the Red Hook rec center for a morning swim.
- 264m warmup
- Intervals - repeat 10x
- 44m freestyle sprint
- 44m breaststroke
- 264m cool down
Total distance: 1408m. It’s so nice to swim outdoors in the sunshine, even if my stroke is atrocious.
Finally made it to the Red Hook Rec Center pool this morning. The laps are 44m here, so the numbers are a little wacky:
- Intervals - repeat 8x
- 88m freestyle sprint
- 44m breaststroke
- 264m cool down
Total distance: 1320m. This is a great pool when it’s not too crowded. There’s a separate lap swimming area for adults, the laps are longer than any other local pool, and you’re outdoors. It’s also free all summer. What more could you want?
I have a swim/run race in July and I haven’t been swimming at all. Met Dave at the Metropolitan Pool today to get rid of the rust:
- 300m warm up
- 200m kick (100 front, 50 left, 50 right)
- 600m mixed stroke
- 300m cool down
Total time: 35 minutes. Total distance: 1400m.
I’m really feeling the rust. I need to get my ass in that pool 2x/week for the next few weeks if I want to make a respectable showing in the Hudson.
I had to make sure I took a dip in the nice pool Lifetime Fitness before leaving.
- 300m warm up
- Intervals - repeat 10x
- 25 freestyle sprint
- 25 breaststroke
- 200m cool down
Total time: 26 minutes. Total distance: 1000m. Finished sweating in the sauna, then showered up and headed to the airport.
I completed my first ever triathlon today - the Schiff Scout Off-Road Tri in Wading River, NY. I’ve done swim races, road races, swim/run races, and bike/run races, so it was only a matter of time before I took on a full triathlon. The Schiff Scout is a .5 mile swim, 10 mile mountain bike, and a 3.1 mile trail run. My total time was a sluggish 1:59:30, which was good for 53rd place out of 138.
I did pretty well on the swim (16:17, 35th overall) and ok on the run (26:53 - it was pretty tough to climb the hills after my legs were shot from the biking), but it took me a miserable 1:13 to complete the bike course (137th overall). I was totally out of my league and I wasn’t even sure I would be able to finish the 10 miles. I kept the mantra “it doesn’t matter how slow you go as long as you don’t stop” running through my head and pushed through to finish, but it sure wasn’t pretty.
Zachy and Dave also competed - they teamed up to form the Gorgeous Angels and did way better (1:43) since Zach is a master bikeman and the triathlon is all about the bike leg.
The thing is, I’m not even motivated to get better at biking and to redeem myself because it was really no fun at all. I’ll stick to swim races and the occaisonal run, thanks.
At the Chelsea Rec Center on a blissfully uncrowded Friday summer morning. I had an entire lane to myself for part of the time today!
- 300m warm up
- 200m kick (100 front, 50 left, 50 right)
- Intervals - repeat 10x
- 25 freestyle sprint
- 25 breaststroke
- 250m cool down
Total time: 30 minutes. Total distance: 1250m.
Not everything is blissful about summer mornings - I haven’t been able to cool down since my swim. I took a long shower, but it didn’t take and as soon as I stepped outside I started dripping sweat again. I was a 6 on the sweat index by the time I got to work. Blech.
